Kill your intranet

In 2015, if you still need an intranet I think you’re doing it wrong.

Even tools like sharepoint are an indicator of the corporate death march.

The problem with most intranets is they’re documentation for a combination of broken or badly designed internal systems and process. In fact, most of this process was never actually designed. The reality is most organisations rely on small groups of people that know how to get stuff done.

What we really need is less documentation. More conversations. Shared knowledge.

If we really believe in working software over documentation, let’s give people better tools. Not more content to read. Better ways of working.

You don’t need a portal.

You don’t need customisable desktop widgets.

You don’t need more forms.

How to start again? Why not just delete the whole damn thing. At least turn it off and see what happens.
